Activated carbon, usually derived from charcoal, is a type of carbon that has been processed to increase the size and alter the ability to absorb in its surface area as to produce a larger available area through which a desired absorption or chemical reaction can occur. A common type tool in the production of activated carbon is, impregnation with the use of chemicals.


Method of Production and Quality of Activated Carbon



Chemical impregnation using acids, bases or salts can however prove problematic in some cases in the production of activated carbon products. A common result of using these types of chemicals is a small amount of residue remaining in the end product even after carbonization. This method of production of activated carbon is still preferred to the physical activation. The reason for this preference is the lower temperatures and abbreviated amount of time required to produce a viable product.

The quality of activated carbon filters is apparent after determining the density of the particular amount. The higher density indicates better quality activated carbon. Density of an activated carbon paramount to its efficiency. A less dense activated carbon will produce ash. The ash content, if it is high, will reduce the positive activity of any activated carbon. The acid and water soluble ash content however, can produce ferric oxide which is a positive if the application of the activated carbon is marine. If the application is not specialized, metals can dissolved out of the activated carbon and produce an unwanted discoloration


The Hardness and Abrasiveness of Activated Carbon



Equally important to activated carbon is its hardness and abrasive number. The hardness and abrasiveness of the activated carbon can change its resistance to attrition. It is integral to activated carbon to maintain its physical integrity. Activated carbon must be able to withstand the friction imposed by backwashing and several other common outcomes of its use in a variety of applications. The differences in the hardness of activated carbon product is immense as they depend on the raw material and activity level of the particular activated carbon.

The activated carbon production can be controlled with the implication of sophisticated analytical equipment. Specialized companies will be able to control the particle distribution regardless of the particle size. This process is referred to as; washing, screening and grinding. This process, if performed to do so with the use of certain acids during the wash, can lower the produced amount of water soluble and acid soluble ash, thus producing a more efficient product
