Another Successful Year at American Water Works Association

Carbon Resources exhibited at the ACE10 American Water Works Association tradeshow that was held this month in Chicago, Illinois. An informal survey was conducted by Janney Capital Markets with roughly 100 exhibitors**. About 70% of the respondents felt sales were either on par or up by single digits versus one year ago and most expected sales to accelerate in the next year with 40% expecting double-digit growth. We anticipate that some of this growth will be coming from the disinfectant by-product rule mandated by the EPA that goes into law in 2012.

There was strong interest in our sabre series™ CR325AA powder activated carbon especially for those municipalities that do performance based bidding. This product has proven time and time again to be the most cost effective product for geosmin and MIB removal. Carbon Resources will even offer comparative testing in some cases, to those municipalities that currently don’t have a system in place to allow for performance based bidding.

Committee member Robert Potwora, Carbon Resources’ Technical Director, attended the AWWA Standards Committee meeting on Activated Carbon held during the event. The committee is currently updating the B604-05 Granular Activated Carbon standard for drinking water. An updated standard is expected to be released this year and Carbon Resources will update our readers when it becomes available.

Carbon Resources would like to congratulate Mr. Robert Maul of American Water Co.-Western Division, St. Louis, MO. Mr. Maul was the winner of the iPod touch drawing that Carbon Resources offered during this event. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth and introduced yourselves.

Next year the American Water Works Association ACE11 will be held in Washington DC from June 12-16. Carbon Resources will be exhibiting and potentially presenting a technical paper.

Robert Potwora Attends ASTM International D-28 Committee Meeting

The spring meeting of the ASTM International D-28 Activated Carbon Committee was held April 19 in St. Louis. This was the first meeting Robert Potwora presided in his newly elected position as Vice-Chairman. In this position he also serves as the committees Membership Chairman. There were several attendees representing the manufacturing side and end users of activated carbon as well as new affiliates accepted. A web based teleconference was held for members who could not attend.

There were several items regarding long term and short term projects covered at this meeting for liquid phase and gas phase testing. One of the items being reviewed was the need for a precision and bias statement for the pH test method. Carbon Resources will participate in an interlaboratory study to generate this data. Also up for discussion was the status on the development of a new test method to measure the adsorptive capacity of activated carbon for mercury in flue gas. The flue gas market could be one of the largest single markets for activated carbon and standardization is critical. It was unanimously decided that there is a growing need for standardized test methods and because of this, the committee is planning to conduct a teleconference in August in order to keep the development of these standardized tests progressing.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for October 11 in San Antonio. At this meeting there will be more discussions on refining some of the definitions and a review of potential university studies.

Robert Potwora attended the Industry Forum and Joint Committee on Drinking Water Treatment Units (DWTU) Standards held at NSF World headquarters in Ann Arbor, MI this month.

The Industry Forum is composed of industry representatives while the joint committee includes industry representatives, regulators and product users. The committees met to review the NSF/American National Standards on DWTU (Drinking Water Treatment Units) to ensure they are current given the development of new technologies and the discovery of new contaminants in the drinking water supply.

The task force on Endocrine-Disrupting Compounds (EDC) and Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCP) proposed the possibility of a new standard to cover removal of these compounds. It was discussed that NSF / ANSI Standard 53 may not apply because the health effects are not clearly defined. A task force was formed to look a developing a new standard for sustainability/recycling. The green aspects of POU/POE treatment devices are becoming more important. Various clarifications and improvements to the existing standards were discussed to ensure the different certifying agencies are all using the same methodologies.

Ken Schaeffer gave a presentation at the 23rd Annual International Activated Carbon Conference on October 7, 2008 held in Pittsburgh regarding the Activated Carbon Industry.

Ken’s presentation focused on the many changes that are taking place in the worldwide activated carbon market, particularly with respect to pricing and supply constraints. In his presentation, there were several key areas that are affecting supply and demand of activated carbon:

● Metallurgical grade coal price increasing 150%
● Chinese demand for coal increasing while some plants that produce coal are shutting down due to environmental regulations
● Import tax of 62-220% on coal/coconut-shell activated carbons coming out of China
● Domestic coal producers at or near capacity
● Ocean freight increasing 25%
● Increased demand for coconut shell activated carbons are putting pressure on producers and coconut char prices
● New regulations for water treatment plants and coal-fired power plants that may require several hundred million pounds more of activated carbon in the next decade

Mr. Schaeffer also discussed that some importers are suspected of “skirting” the duty by shipping Chinese activated carbons to another country and then importing to the United States.

Another major domestic carbon producer spoke about a newly developed test method that will allow testing of any coal-based activated carbon product that is imported to determine the exact location of where the coal was mined. This test will be able to detect which companies are illegally bringing in Chinese coal-base activated carbon.

New BioGard™ Anti-microbial Product

Carbon Resources is partnering with Molecular Products to provide an alternative product to silver-impregnated carbons for anti-microbial applications. The Chemsorb®BioGard™ product features a new patented antimicrobial agent effective against a wide spectrum of microorganisms, fungi, yeasts and mold and passed NSF 42 testing for bacteriostasis and extractables.

The BioGard™ product has a BIOSAFE antimicrobial agent which is a quaternary ammonium silane polymer that is deposited within the pores of the activated carbon. This process creates a “pin cushion” configuration of molecules that are permanently bound to the activated carbon. These molecules act like millions of molecular swords physically disrupting the target organism’s cell membrane.

Unlike silver impregnated carbons, this new product exhibits extremely low toxicity to human health and does not leach into the filtered water. The activity on the activated carbon remains intact and because coconut shell carbon is the base material, it has high surface area, high hardness and low dust. In recent tests, we have found that the BioGard™ has almost double the effectiveness than silver impregnated carbons as shown in the graph below:

In addition to this being a lower cost alternative to silver, it also has other Benefits. The antimicrobial technology is not progressively depleted with use like silver metal ions and therefore exhibits a longer service life. It is also safer and environmentally friendly.

Carbon Resources Goes Green

The three most common base materials for producing activated carbons are wood, coal and coconut. Of these three, coconut shell is the most “green” product with respect to renewable resources. The coconut tree produces coconuts three times a year, while the tree is left to produce again, whereas wood-based carbon comes from trees which take several years to mature.

To celebrate going green, we will package our coconut shell carbons in green poly bags, starting with the 55 pound bags.

In addition, our new joint-venture plant in Mexico utilizes a kiln to char the coconut shells instead of the traditional pit charring which emits large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Capturing the carbon dioxide in the kiln reduces emissions up to 90% from traditional methods.

July 2007
CHINA ACTIVATED CARBON UPDATE

It has been a very tumultuous year in the activated carbon industry. In early 2006, Calgon Carbon Corp. and Norit Americas filed an anti-dumping petition against imported steam activated carbon from China (even though Calgon is the biggest importer of Chinese carbon).

The petition was successful and this Spring final new duties of approx. 67% were levied by the Department of Commerce (DOC) and the International Trade Commission (ITC) on activated carbon from China. This is added to previous existing duty of 4.8% so total new duty is now approx. 71% and this will be in place for 5-10 years. In the short term, Calgon and Norit receive the anti-dumping duties as they are the damaged business parties in the U.S, but that will end in Oct. 2007 when the Byrd Amendment expires and anti-dumping duties will then go to the General Fund.

China carbon prices also have been going up due to more coal mines closing because of safety and environmental problems, ever higher ocean freight rates (doubled in last few years) and coal consumption in China is at all time high due to scores of new power plants being constructed in the country so coal availability is limited and coal prices have risen.

Just this month, another 13% price increase in China activated carbons was announced to start July 1, 2007 because the 13% VAT (tax) rebate that the China government allowed is being eliminated. Carbon Resources is raising prices on China coal carbons (our “B” series) and “W” series wood-base carbons, effective July, 1, 2007.

The bottom line is that China supplied about 25% of the U.S. activated carbon requirements and now that supply has been curtailed and prices have risen approx. 85% in the past year. The domestic producers have accordingly raised their prices so the entire market is now at a much higher price level for coal base activated carbons.

Carbon Resources suggests that our customers consider switching from coal carbon to coconut shell carbon if their application permits. Coconut shell activated carbon has historically been considered a premium carbon and was priced much higher than coal carbon, but that is no longer the case. Coconut shell is harder, less dust and fines, typically more active and is about 10% more dense than bituminous coal carbon. Coconut shell carbon is available in sizes such as 8x30, 8x16, 12x30, 12x40, and 20x50 all in regular and acid-washed grades. Please contact us for more information.

Carbon Resources celebrates it’s 10th year exhibiting at the Water Quality Trade Show Association that was held March 27th through the 30th in Orlando, Florida. “It was one of our better trade shows because we had such a big interest in our Spartan products for chloramines, sulfides and iron as well as being able to share with our existing customers the new products we are working on and our plans for plant expansions that will be occurring in 2007” states Kimberly Walsh, Vice President of Marketing. “We also had a lot of interest in our “A” series product which is a non-chinese coal base carbon. With price escalations on coal base products from China occurring because of the anti-dumping petition filed by Calgon Corporation and Norit, this product is attractive not only for it’s price but also for it’s high activity, low density characteristics.” Next year Carbon Resources will be giving a technical presentation at the annual trade show which will be held during March in Las Vegas, Nevada.

January 2007
Carbon Resources has developed a range of non-chemically impregnated activated carbons called Spartan Series. The Spartan Series products have been surface modified during manufacturing to significantly enhance the carbons' capability for rapidly decomposing noxious compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, and chloramines.

The Spartan series of products are all produced from our high quality coconut shell carbons, and in addition to their capacity to handle sulfides etc., they have much higher surface areas than most other competitive brands. This enables them to remove larger quantities of other organic species which may be present in the system.

Because of the enhanced surface, it has fast adsorption kinetics and typical contact times of 5-15 minutes are not as critical.

The benefits of Spartan Series™ are:

  • No chemicals
  • No bed fires
  • No disposal problem
  • High quality coconut shell
  • High capacity for hydrogen sulfide
  • High capacity for chloramines
  • High capacity for organics
There will be a technical bulletin on the Carbon Resources web site published next month regarding the Spartan Series effects on chloramines.
